Rel = "nofollow": the announced death of the blogs?
The taking into account of the attribute rel = "nofollow" by the search engines seems to receive a very favorable reception in a part of the blogosphère. Some bloggers seeing a way there of fighting against the Spam of their comments, gradually set up it.
However, if one considers the medium-term effects of this new attribute, one has the right to wonder whether it quite simply will not kill the blogs.
The structure of the bonds inter-blogs constitutes the element determining of their visibility on the Web. The networks of blogs, which they are organized or "in fact", get for each dependent blogs a significant quantity of backlinks. These backlinks, while making them "important" with the eyes of the search engines, ensures to them a good positioning and thus a good visibility in Google, Yahoo and MSN. And which says visibility says visitors.
With the nofollow, this structure is indeed called into question. And even in the long term striped chart. At least of that of the search engines. Then, with rel = "nofollow", it is not improbable to see very soon the positioning of the blogs in the search engines collapsing. And their traffic to decrease. Seen under this angle one can wonder indeed whether rel = "nofollow" is really a friend who wants good to them.
The more so as, without shouting with the world plot of GOLD against the blogosphère, one can wonder about the motivations of Google Yahoo and MSN in this business:
Why did they feel the need to take into account this attribute?
Isn't this because they consider that the structure of the bonds of the blogs makes lose relevance with their results?
Then, to think that they have launched this attribute to help nice bloggers, which is those which disturb them, it is perhaps to be made illusions. And to think that they made it to disencumber their indices of the weblogs, it is perhaps not pure paranoia.
The idea makes its way in the blogosphère.. Some blogs start to join the clan of "No nofollow". Some even take part in the google bombing.
Friends bloggers.. all the opinions are sizeable, but it is not interdict to change some. Google is perhaps not only one nice big brother.
The bloggers did not await intitiative search engines to fight the Spam, to go a little further, small nonexhaustive inventory of fixtures of the solutions which existed already before the nofollow:
- To replace the bonds of the comments by a standard URL of redirection 302, it "I have chance" of Google or meta refresh with more than 0 seconds;
- To return the URL not cliquables or in Javascript;
- Definitively to remove the possibility of carrying out a bond.
Unfortunately, this type of solution, even if they make it possible not to distribute a pagerank to the spammeurs do not remove to in no case the Spam of your blogs!
The large one of the spams of comments is in fact carried out by software (spambots) which is created specifically for scanner the Web (often via the search engines) with the research of the pages of comments and the forms that they fill automatically. It is not rare that they leave 10, 50 or 100 messages on same a blog in a few minutes, even seconds.
Vis-a-vis at this flood massive, some solutions had already been installation:
- To activate the validation of the comments before their setting on line: that obliges the author with all to clean with the hand;
- To block the IP of the spammeurs: ineffective, they change IP each time;
- To increase the minimum time between 2 comments: Ca leaves at least one of them;
- To use the blacklists URL of the spammeurs or words key which they use to put on standby validation certain comments;
- To change the structure of the blog (file names, of repertoires...) so that the spambots do not detect them.
Some of these techniques proved reliable, but the spammeurs adapt their tools constantly.
And the nofollow in all that?
As we saw, there are two types of spams of comments: automatic (spambots) or handbook. The nofollow will not stop the automatic flood comments of blog, forums, visitors' books, wiki or other places of free expression of the Web On the other hand, it can have its utility within the framework of the manual Spam as well as the redirections already used. But precisely, that does it bring moreover than these redirections?
Then where is the problem?
We saw it, this system will harm the visibility of the blogs on the search engines. The latter is indeed partly due to the bonds in the comments, on the name of their authors, like with the trackbacks.
But it is not the single defect related to this innovation:
- No improvement of the relevance of the results of the engines will be noted, whereas it is also one of the principal objectives of this operation;
- All that resembles a large operation marketing of the engines which do not wish to call into question their system of grading of the results. It is sure: the Web lost much its "purity" of the beginnings whereas today each backlink has a price. With the nofollow, the BL will be negotiated even expensive.
By improvising a hack of short term the engines verouillent their business. They realize well that their results are less and less relevant. However, they need this relevance in order to generate traffic, traffic of which they will be able to send a part to their customers who them pay the backlink not, but the click via the sponsored bonds.
The problem, it is that they ask the users to do their work in order to increase the relevance of their results. And strangest, in fact the bloggers accept this solution, even if it means to reduce their own visibility and certainly to impose the nofollow to the spammeurs of Sunday, but also with the remainder of their visitors.
Everyone helmet, and Google plays there the part of the fireman pyromaniac... Because finally, if the spammeurs spamment, it is to be in the results of Google. An alternative solution, and certainly more in direct relationship to the problem, would have been to give less weight to the BL in their algo, but inevitably, Ca would have been less good for their wallets.
When with those for which the professional référenceurs will be the first to suffer from the nofollow, they did not include/understand large thing.
The customers who pay are those which have budget for purchase of key words or optimization of site, even for purchase of BL (into hard and without nofollow). At the hour when one speaks about ethical referencing or of Search Engine Marketing (SEM), few référenceurs pro will have fun and lose their time with spammer blog or visitors' books.
Relevant trés opinion of the W3C' ists and an elite in particular of the standardization of the beacon: the fault with the seos (© bond without nofollow:))
Are funny there these guy nevertheless, still the fault with the eater of stork any Ca
To finish, from the perverse effect could rise from the massive use of the nofollow. What guaranteed us that it will one day not be integrated in the algorithms of certain engines in order to detect the strutures which use them or the targets of these particular bonds? Already, in the spirit of certain blogueurs, they become a tool of denunciation with respect to Google. With when the bombings in nofollow?
While speaking about "Google bomb", isn't this there the phenomenon most representative of the failure of the algo of Google?
One trés beautiful quotation of an advised blogger to conclude:
The blogsphère is a ecosystème, and the massive use of weeding, as Google recommends it and TypePad is not a very respectful solution of this environment.
